FAQs
What does an eye doctor do during an exam?
The doctor will review your history of eye health as well as your family history, determine your visual acuities, check your intraocular pressure and examine the response of your pupils to light. The doctor will also dilate your eyes to examine the posterior structures of your eye and if necessary perform a variety of specialized tests.
What is dilation?
Dilation involves the use of eye drops to temporarily enlarge the pupil so the doctor can see more of the inside of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve.
How much does an eye exam cost?
The cost of an eye exam varies depending on the services required. Please contact our office for current pricing and to find out what your insurance covers.
Why do I need a prescription for contact lenses?
Contact lenses are medical devices regulated by the FDA. A prescription ensures the lenses fit properly and are appropriate for your vision needs, helping to prevent eye infections and other complications.
How much are the contacts you provide?
Contact lens pricing depends on the brand and type required for your prescription. Our staff will provide you with a complete cost breakdown during your fitting appointment.
What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist? What is an optician?
An optometrist (O.D.) provides primary eye care including exams and prescriptions. An ophthalmologist (M.D.) is a medical doctor who can perform surgery. An optician fills prescriptions for glasses and contacts but does not examine eyes.
How often should I have an eye exam?
Adults with no vision problems should have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years. Children and those with eye conditions or risk factors may need more frequent visits.
Will my computer harm my eyes?
Extended screen time can cause digital eye strain, leading to symptoms like dryness, headaches, and blurred vision. The 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds — can help reduce discomfort.
What do I do if I injure my eye?
Do not rub your eye. For chemical exposure, flush immediately with water. For a foreign object or impact injury, seek emergency eye care or visit our office right away. Call us if you are unsure of the severity.
Are there any specific foods or vitamins that prevent loss of eyesight?
Leafy greens, fish rich in omega-3s, and foods high in vitamins C and E may help protect against age-related eye conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Ask us about supplements that may benefit your eye health.
How do I know if I am a good candidate for Lasik surgery?
Good candidates for LASIK are typically over 18 with a stable prescription, adequate corneal thickness, and no significant eye disease. We can evaluate your suitability and provide a referral to a trusted surgeon.
